All Saints Day

“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious…” -Einstein

“I believe that [Einstein] meant a sense of awe, a sense that there are things larger than us… A sense that we can stand right at the edge between known and unknown and gaze into that cavern and be exhilarated rather than frightened…” —Alan Lightman

What if light stretches
across spacetime horizons
to remember love?

Speaking of remembering love, tomorrow is All Saints Day, one of my favorite days of the church year.

This past week, I had blood drawn during a routine physical. Grateful to say that, overall, I’m healthy. One of the special tests ordered by my doctor, though, showed a high Lipoprotein(a) level, a distinct genetic connection to my family, my ancestors.

A few years back, I created an image for All Saints Day. Here it is from my sketchbook:

There was much to ponder as this All Saints Day sketch came into being. I remember how the dark brown spaces reminded me of the echoing wounds in generations of trees.

“Deeper histories live in us. Every heart is a crypt and a hope chest handed down.” -James K. A. Smith

“The thing about being human is that we are born, we live, we grieve, and we celebrate, and one day we pass on, becoming ancestors and guides to those who come after us.” -Kaitlin Curtice

Time will tell whether this particular genetic trait has been passed along to my children, my children’s children, and so on. To name it and be vigilant is now our work.

A blessed, “larger than us” All Saints Day to you, Friend.
