January 3

Not too long ago I was online with a group and mentioned that I had once glued a tiny feather in my journal. Its memory just popped up from 2014. Sure enough, I pulled out the journal and although a little worse for the wear, it’s still there. ๐Ÿ™‚

โ€œThere are those that have in themselves the gift of Joy. … To them Joy is given as a precious ingredient in life. …in their faces we sense a glory which is the very light of Heaven.โ€ โ€”Howard Thurman, From the Inward Journey

โ€œIt turns out there are things beyond storyโ€”beyond human subjectivity. Beyond experience. Like what, you ask? . . . Red is not just a word or an idea; there is โ€˜something outsideโ€™ what we can say or think about itโ€”โ€˜somethingโ€™ in its doing that slips away from the best descriptions, even those that come from verbose writings like mine.โ€ โ€”Bayo Akomolafe, These Wilds Beyond Our Fences, p. 56-57

โ€œSeven Years of Wonderโ€ is a daily look back at my creative journaling posts since 2014. I began this journey on Feb. 11, 2021, and hope to continue through Feb. 10, 2022. What am I learning about my art and faith journey thus far? What has remained constant? Where have I been changed? How is this impacting present and future art-making?

A deep bow of gratitude to you for keeping me company on this journey.

I find it interesting, that we are more and more hearing / seeing the important role that gratitude plays in our spiritual journey. Perhaps amid the loss, and grief, and stress of the last (almost) 2 years of COVID we have begun to see that gratitude is not weakness. Gratitude breaks the barriers that our obsession with individualism creates.
