Finding Our Rhythm – Ash Wednesday

When I consider Ash Wednesday, I remember a conversation with my dear friend and mentor, Liz, about her desire to some day receive the ashes on her forehead with the words, “Remember you are stardust, and to stardust you shall return.”

There’s also something special about the ritual of making the ashes from the previous year’s Palm Sunday palms that I wanted to include in the design.

I plan to paint the night sky beyond the smudged cross, and both will be sparkling. 🙂

Haiku integration:

Past-praise-turned-ruins

Rise to smudge brow. Remember,

Love calls us all home.

This is work in process, part of a collection, “Finding Our Rhythm in the Fullness of Time,” commissioned for Valparaiso University’s Institute of Liturgical Studies gathering in April 2023. More info about that event here – https://www.valpo.edu/institute-of-liturgical-studies/theme/.
